A member of the Betulaceae or birch family, the Red Alder is found in the western US from the northern coastal areas between California and Alaska as far east as Montana. Favoring moist areas and evergreen forests these trees grow along streams and in marshy areas. Historically used by the Native people of the northwest as a bitter tonic, the bark contains salicin and has been used both internally and topically. The inner bark of this versatile tree has been used as a dye and its wood has been used for smoking salmon making canoes cooking tools and more recently in cabinetry. The dried bark extract is used by David Winston in his Healthy Skin Tonic as well as Scudders Alterative.
