Propolis, a resinous like gummy material produced by bees and used to seal cracks and smooth walls in their hives, was used in Ancient Egypt for embalming and by Ancient Greek and Roman physicians. The fragrant extract made from propolis smells sweet and is used by David Winston in his Herbal Relief Throat Spray as well as in his topical Comfrey/Calendula and St. Johnswort/Sage ointments.
