Zanthoxylum clava-herculis in the Rutaceae family is a spiny shrubby tree native to southeastern US and commonly known as the Hercules’ club. Used by the native people of the region, the dried bark extract tingles the tongue. David Winston uses it in his Alterative Compound and two of his Practitioner only formulas: Spirolyd Compound and Eli Jones Compound Syrup of Scrophularia.
