Oregon grape is a member of the Berberidaceae or barberry family. Like many in that family, it contains the alkaloid berberine, which gives its root a yellow color. Native to the Pacific Northwest it is has used by the Native American tribes local to the area. The roots we use are gathered by local wildcrafters and made into a bitter-tasting extract. David Winston blends it into several of his formulas including Alterative Compound, Thistles Compound, UT Compound and Astragalus/Echinacea Compound.
