He Shou Wu (sometimes called Fo-Ti, though He Shou Wu is the correct nomenclature) is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a restorative tonic. A member of the Polygonaceae family, the processed roots are used to nourish the Chinese liver and kidney, as well as blood (Xue) and Jing. The herb's name translates to "Mr. He's dark hair" - referring to the Chinese legend in which an old man takes the root and experiences remarkable youth-restoring effects.
