Cordyceps, or Dong Chong Xia Cao, is one of the great tonic remedies in TCM. It is also revered in Tibet where it is known as “yartsa gunbu”. The caterpillar fungus originally parasitized various moth species but the two most commonly used species, Ophiocordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris, are now primarily grown for their fruiting bodies or mycelia on a medium such as brown rice, and no insects are involved.
