The spring ephemeral, Cleavers, is in the Rubiaceae family. It got its botanical name, Galium, from the Greek physician, Dioscorides. Galium is derived from the ancient Greek word for milk, as the flowers and the plant were used instead of rennet to curdle milk to make cheese. The fresh plant makes a soothing extract for the urinary tract*.
