Awareness of the importance of kidney health is growing. Even during recent periods when customers were focused on immune health or stress support, there was high demand for kidney health support products. Supporting kidney health is something I view as a priority as these are essential organs.
In simple terms, the kidneys filter your blood, about 40 gallons of fluid every day. They sift and hold certain nutrients, excrete wastes, extra water, and excess nutrients, which are routed to the bladder and flushed away as urine. The kidneys also produce several hormones, so they act as part of the overall endocrine system which helps to regulate blood pressure, makes red blood cells, and activates vitamin D, which is a pro hormone with a broad range of activity in the body. There are two kidneys, a pair of purplish brown organs located below the ribs toward the middle of the back, and if you've ever had kidney pain, you know exactly where your kidneys are.
While we are exposed to a great number of toxic chemicals in our food, homes, and environment, the human body is quite good at eliminating metabolic wastes, with the kidneys at the forefront.
Many of the herbs for kidney health are known as alteratives, which are used to gently enhance normal elimination via the major eliminatory organs (liver, kidneys, bowel, skin, lymph, and lungs). Those organ systems are interrelated and the herbs we use to support kidney health can often act on these interconnected eliminatory systems. Alteratives that specifically act on the kidneys and lymph (fluid metabolism) are known as antidyscratics and include herbs such as Cleavers, Dandelion leaf, Juniper berry, Pipsissewa, and Burdock seed.
